Gear Spotlight: REVEL GEAR on Kickstarter

Screen Shot 2016-08-30 at 11.04.48 AM

REVEL GEAR out of Boulder, Colorado, sent me a note about a Kickstarter project that excites me, and I thought it very worthy of sharing. Dubbed “The Future of Portable Power and Light,” this is a campaign to launch a couple new products – a solar powered REVEL LIGHT strand perfect for stringing around camp, around the back porch, or around your tent. Revel is also launching the Night Owl Solar Pack, perfect for charging the electronics we all can’t seem to go without while outdoors (me included). Both harness the power of sunlight to charge and fuel your fun and your memories outside.

Holland Lake in Montana

Holland Lake

Holland Lake is a popular destination in western Montana because of its water, the day hike to Holland Falls, and the campground. It’s a lake I have visited many times. Only 1 hr. 20 min. from Missoula, and nearly the same from Kalispell, it’s an easy day trip for families, couples, or those seeking solitude. From Seeley Lake it’s 20 miles northwest on Montana Highway 83 (between mile markers 36 and 37),  then 2.9 miles down Holland Lake Road to Larch Loop Campground, then another ¾ of a mile to the Bay Look Compound turn-in, which is where the trail to Holland Falls starts. Holland Lake is at 4,100 feet and lies on the western edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, and the trailhead here is one of the most popular for entering the Wilderness Area.

Body Glove 3T Barefoot Water Shoes

Body Glove Footwear, the worldwide water sports brand celebrating 60 years of innovation and experience in wetsuits, swimwear, clothing, footwear, accessories, and technology accessories, recently sent me a pair of their new 3T Barefoot Max water shoes to put through the proverbial “ringer.”

I took them for a long day of fly fishing on the lower Clark Fork River in western Montana, and here are my notes.

Gear Review: Survival Strap Paracord Bracelet

Survival Strap 1Survival Strap 2Survival Strap 3

Back when I worked for the major outdoor retailer and co-op, REI, we had a saying about how much gear one should bring camping. It went something like: “One already wastes too much by not bringing enough.” What we meant by this is to be careful in the pursuit of going “minimal” in the backcountry because you may end up in a situation where you really needed something you didn’t bring and not what you did bring.

Gear Review: Swedish FireKnife

Swedish FireKnife 1Swedish FireKnife 2Swedish FireKnife 3Swedish FireKnife 4Swedish FireKnife 5Swedish FireKnife 5Swedish FireKnife 7

Aren’t we all looking for that go-to knife to carry with us when we’re hunting, fishing and recreating outdoors? I know I am, and thanks to Light My Fire and Mora of Sweden, I might have it. They sent me one of their new Swedish FireKnife to do what else – make fire! And that I did.

On my three-day camping/fishing trip to a small lake in the Seeley Swan Valley in western Montana, I vowed to only use this knife (come rain or shine) to make fire and keep myself and my family warm. And, thankfully, I did and it did.
